Source Water Protection Specialist


West Virginia Rural Water Association is hiring a Source Water Protection (SWP) Specialist. The SWP specialist will be responsible for developing and updating current watershed and groundwater protection plans for public water suppliers across West Virginia. The Specialist will assist water systems and their communities in implementing their protection plans through education and outreach, as well as on-site project involvement. The Specialist will also be responsible for attending public meetings and one-on-one meetings with water suppliers and other state and federal entities.

Candidates must have knowledge about watershed resources, and an understanding of community-based planning is beneficial. Education in a natural resources related field is preferred; This could include Watershed Resources, Geology, Environmental Studies or Science, Conservation, Land Use Planning, or other similar fields. The ability to work with people independently and facilitate meetings is required, and the candidate must have the ability to develop plans and technical reports. Experience using GIS software is preferred. 5 years minimum experience in a related field or public water supply field is required. The candidate must have a valid WV driver’s license.

Environmental Compliance Officer

The Berkeley County Public Service Sewer District is seeking an individual to fill the opening of Environmental Compliance Officer. The Environmental Compliance Officer shall develop, implement, and conduct laboratory, monitoring, testing, inspecting, and administrative duties to ensure the District’s compliance with applicable federal and state statutory and regulatory requirements, including any applicable regulatory or judicial orders, pertaining to: water, wastewater, stormwater, and industrial waste, as well as performing other related duties as assigned. The Environmental Compliance Officer will conduct formal annual inspections of the District’s facilities, generate written reports, evaluate policies and procedures and provide recommendations for improvement. Work will also include coordination of activities with regulatory agencies and industrial permit users.

The position requires the individual to possess strong interpersonal and public relation skills to be able to work effectively with staff, management personnel, customers, regulatory agencies, and other outside contacts. The individual should also possess professional knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques concerned with facilities and systems for controlling pollution and protecting quality of resources and the environment and have professional knowledge of pertinent federal and state statutes and regulations.

The position requires an equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related field and at least two (2) years of experience in water/wastewater sampling and analysis; laboratory work; pretreatment and industrial waste inspecting and monitoring; and performing related environmental compliance duties. At least one year of technical and functional supervision is desirable.
